Liverpool born Ian McNabb first rose to prominence with The Icicle Works when they scored two major hit singles – Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream) and Love is a Wonderful Colour – and their debut album was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, achieving gold record status in Canada.
The Icicle Works released four albums between ’83 and ’88, all-achieving top forty placing, until they broke up and Ian went on to record Permanent Damage, the last album under the name The Icicle Works, using session musicians.
Ian’s first solo album Truth and Beauty was rapturously received by both fans and critics alike but it was Head Like a Rock, released in ’94, that was his breakthrough album returning him to the upper reaches of the top forty and was nominated for a prestigious ‘Mercury prize’.
Since then, he has gone on to record a number of albums including the excellent pop Merseybeast (another top forty success), the sublime A Party Political Broadcast on Behalf of the Emotional Party, live acoustic album Live at Life and most recently Waifs & Strays. .
Ian has been a professional musician since the age of fifteen although he now reckons he’s only just getting started. Good start Ian…
